"the curtains weren't blue on purpose. why should we care?"
my love! let me ask you this - did you eat breakfast today? this tiny moment in your life. just think about it. did you?
for some of you, the answer is yes and for some of you it is technically and for some of you it is does coffee count. some of you reached for cereal or gmo-free overnight oats or frozen waffles or 3-day-old pizza. sometimes we eat the same thing, every day, for weeks. i get tired of eggs randomly, only to go back to craving them desperately. i'm cuban; i take my coffee like my father showed me, very milky and sweet.
some of us ate in a hurry. some of us hate eating breakfast but if we don't we will get nauseous later. some of us took our meds first or took our meds after. some of us have a kitchen 5 feet wide and sometimes it's the biggest room in the house. some of us are confident there will be food in the pantry and some of us flinch and say well, the paycheck is coming. some of us turn on a podcast while we eat or we scroll our phones or write in our diaries.
some of us are choosing, specifically, not to eat breakfast. some of us are too busy. some of us are pretending we "just forgot," but we are ignoring the warning signs that everything feels too-heavy. some of us are so consumed with anxiety or grief that we can't eat. some of us can't stand up long enough to make our coffee. some of us have no table to sit down and eat.
i cannot tell you what an artist "meant" by their choices. but they did have to make a choice, conscious or otherwise, to give you information. to give you a little bit more light. each of these choices are little stars of data; connecting speckles for you to weave through, drawing a line.
you cannot use a mirror in a dark room. for some of us; we will not care that the curtains are blue, because that will just be a data point and not enough light to see by. for some of us, the blue curtains will be the same as our childhood bedroom. it will make us seasick. for some of us, blue will be the color of frostbite. it might look like a pixel up close; but from a distance, oh! the picture blooms.
i cannot tell you what will stick out for you. what will carry meaning. some of you will read the sentence "i didn't have breakfast today" and say "this means nothing." some of you will read that and say "oh, me neither." some of you will say "this means the character is probably a little grouchy." some of you will say "oh, i wonder if they're okay. why didn't they eat anything?" ... art is a mirror. i am holding hands with you, over space and time, and asking you to feel something with me.
i want you to read my work and find a blue pair of curtains. i want you to read my work and find things in it that i never imagined placing. i have no way of knowing what will resonate with you, that's true. and maybe i just was hungry while i wrote this, and thinking about the eggs in my fridge. but if you found meaning, that meaning is yours. it cannot be erased just because i didn't "intend" it. you created a different world by interpreting my work. it's collaborative! that's beautiful! that's stunning!
just! imagine looking at the night sky and saying - it's stupid to have a favorite constellation or a favorite star. they're just there.
because here's the thing - across centuries and cultures, we look up. we still find meaning in the stars. these beautiful, lovely scattered accidents. are you looking? they call. and we look back and say oh! of course we are!
#this got away from me#but like#u know#reading is a form of creation#and sometimes the choice that the author makes might SEEM random#but it's like. bro that's telling u something.#also hate the vibe where authors/artists mock their audience for finding meaning in something#nahhhh#if u make art u need to be okay with people finding their own reflection in it

Opposing Qualities for your Characters!
I always advocate the concept of Traits and their Inverses when making characters. If you're familiar with my blog, you'll know that in one of my posts, I've told you to use opposing qualities when you make a character to make them real. Here's a link to that post if you haven't come across it yet so you can understand this better: https://www.tumblr.com/coffeetank/747126821111447552/build-characters?source=share ~ List of more opposing qualities to give your characters: persuasive :: manipulative (your character has a way with words and sometimes uses this to get away with things)
humble :: underconfident (your character does not have an ego at all, but they are in actuality always underconfident - show how this can affect their surroundings especially in a situation where others depend on them)
independent :: alienated (your character can do everything on their own and quite literally does not need anyone around, show how this can crossover over with alienation - dig into the emotional background of this supposed crossover)
curious :: invasive (your character has an appetite for knowledge, but they forget boundaries - show how this can get them into trouble)
daring :: reckless (your character has a strong spirit and isn't scared of taking risks, but this can always incline to the bad side and cause them harm - use this to especially add event and conflict in the story)
neutral :: retracted (your character prefers to see both sides before coming to a conclusion and stays neutral 99% of the times, but then when one side needs them more than the other they refuse to acknowledge that need and pull themselves out of that situation - show how this this can affect their relationships with other people especially on a moral ground)
emotional :: irrational (it's always good for your character to have emotional capacity, but it can hinder with their practical side for sure - show how this plays out)
unique :: aberrant (your character has a very solid personality but then some their quirks are too odd to be normal - this is good for revealing an undercover villain/agent/supernatural being later in the story as a twist)
optimistic :: unserious (your character is a positive person, but they take life too lightly sometimes - play with it!)
appealing :: deceptive (your character is absolute delight to be around and wins hearts in an instant - show how they use this power of their to deceive people for their own benefit)
hopeful :: expectant (your character wishes for the bright side - show how this can transverse into having unfulfilled expectations thus making them act out wrongly due to disappointment)
clever :: cunning (as obvious as it sounds, your character uses their intelligence for the wrong - bonus if you mix this with another set of opposing qualities to add depth and layers to your characters)
short-tempered :: violent (easy, simple and impactful; your character loses temper quickly but they damage things around them with every small/big outburst)
Feel free to use these as you'd like! I'll bring you more soon.
-ashlee

Howdy, Heidi! You said that some fans picked up things that were done on accident… Were there more scenes like that? Also, were there scenes that you guys made on purpose but fans didn’t pick up / were aware of them? In shipping terms (hihi) and in general terms. Thanks!
I think in every type of media you will inevitably see versions of 'authorial' intent vs audience interpretation that overlap and differ from each other in many ways. (Authorial intent in quotes because in collaborative mediums like film and animation every single person on the pipeline who touches the work probably has a slightly different personal interpretation they're contributing to the final work, even under someone like a showrunner or a director).
Humans are smart and it's in our nature to look for connections and find explainations to questions, so most of the time if someone is putting something down, someone is going to pick it up, so to speak, and a lot of things ARE on purpose.
But this same phenomenon can also lead to us seeing connections in places that even the 'authors' might not have originally thought of while creating the work, and I think that can be pretty neat actually! I don't necessarily think reading alternate interpretations of works is wrong-- it can be very healthy to explore multiple reads of a narrative or a character/character dynamic. On Chaos Theory there were definitely times when we were like 'fans are probably gonna ship this even if it's not the text' haha. Sometimes fans latch onto headcanons you really have no control over. Sometimes things were animated slightly differently from how they were conceived (which is also a natural part of things).
But yes, sometimes I have seen a few other things that were interpreted in slightly different ways from how they were directed or written verbally, but I'm personally of the opinion that it's more fun to leave some things visual and open to a little interpretation rather than beating the words over the audience's head and having the characters constantly announcing 'I'm feeling this because of this!' And going 'this is the only way to interpret the show and the characters and if you don't you're wrong!'
It's usually not a huge deal. I think even as we were working sometimes I'd make connections to myself that weren't necessarily spelled out to us and go 'oh, this is a throughline for this character actually!'
Like for example- if I remember correctly, the original direction behind how Kenji reacted to Ben's apparent death was that it was supposed to the first time he'd ever seen someone he really KNEW seemingly die right front of him, and being unable to do anything about it deeply affected him. Ben is a very important turning point in his character development regardless of which way you read it.
And I think this is actually something that just continued to stack onto his character throughout both shows whenever any of his friends lives are seriously in danger. In Camp when he's still unable to do anything but comfort Sammy while she's poisoned, to deciding it's too dangerous not to trade Wu's laptop for Brooklynn, to eventually throwing himself between the spinosaurus his dad is about to kill Darius with and choosing his friends over his own father and being willing to die with/for them... and then in Chaos Theory it kind of reboots all over again with Brooklynn dying and then his dad dying right in front of him, and his complex of not wanting to be useless and trying to do whatever he can at the expense of even himself to keep the loved ones he has left safe is kicked into overdrive.
I think there are a lot of things like that where the intent is not always verbally spelled out, but the more important thing is that it's still (hopefully) making you feel something.
#anyway tldr there always are but I don't think it matters all that much usually#part of the dance of doing a show is offering things up for interpretation and hoping folks pick up on it#I think that one shot I in Camp did also just haunts me because I felt like I accidentally contributed to 'queerbaiting' at the time#but having been on both the creation side and the fandom side of shows now#when fans toss around accusations of queerbaiting and all that in fandoms I'm in it just makes me tired now ajjdjd#and honestly personally some of my favorite ships are not canon and are from things that have long ended and will never be canon#but I've always had some of the most fun with those because folks tend to get more creative with fanworks for ships that aren't canon#my controversial fandom conclusion v_v#I will just end things by saying sometimes 'authors' intend for things to go in different directions than fans want or interpret#and I love shipping as much as the next person#but it can be good to step back and examine stories and characters from a non shipping view sometimes too#both? both. both is good#Sammy and Yaz were always shipped by everyone on the crew though lol#jurassic world chaos theory#jwct#jurassic world#chaos theory#chaos crew#storyboard artist#camp cretaceous#ask#anonymous

So
They finally let me rearrange the religion section at The Bookstore after I spent several months complaining about it. By and large, I'm content with the job I did, but I still have some quibbles with the titles we stock.
Here is a selection of books that we apparently have:
Book about how to understand and love your child who smokes pot
Book about how to get a woman to trust you again after you cheat on her, written by the same author as the one about children smoking pot (what is this guy's life???)
A book called "Raising Prophetic Kids" that I was sorely tempted to buy as a gag for my parents
Prosperity Gospel book that claims to teach you how to become an ultra-rich CEO by following the example of King Solomon
Several dozen fringe eschatology books that are categorized by the publisher as "theology and Christian history" (I did not put them there)
"Inspirational" romance novel about Potiphar's wife
I Am Second book that catapulted me straight back to 2013
Book about spiritual lessons you can share with your horse
Amish harlequins
And two books written by my grandma's prayer partner's husband, a man who gave my parents terrible pre-marital counseling and was generally a pretty big hypocrite. That one was kind of a jump scare lol
#I can't remember if/what i tagged my bookstore stuff it's super late#but i was thinking about this stuff so#will tweak tags tomorrow#will also maybe make a list of authors/books that we carry but i wish we didn't#for now I'll just say that it kinda kills me that ortland and osteen are right next to each other in the alphabet#totally kills me#pontifications and creations#At The Bookstore

3 Traits That'll Make Your Villain as Cunty as Possible!
A sense of style goes a long way: I think a big part of "slaying the house down boots" is having a sense of style that beats down every pissy protag at the bar. Your villain walks into a room in something fresh off the runway, and they know they’re serving. They might have a signature “piece” that they’re known for, too.
They know and acknowledge their weakness: Might be a personal preference, but there’s something about a villain that knows what could be their downfall and they’re just like, “Yeah. And?” Not only does this give them a level of unbreakable, absolute slay energy, but it kind of makes them pretty scary! Like, "I know if you killed my cat it would break me, but try me. See how that works out for you, bestie."
Obstacles don’t phase them: Yeah, your protagonist might be able to get a leg up on them somehow, but having a villain see that and just go “Oh. Okay.” and COMPLETELY pivot without the slightest sense that they’re unnerved or angry is SUCH a serve. It’s like, “Yeah okay, you might have one-upped me but if you think this is gonna change anything, you have another thing coming,” and then next thing your protag knows, villain is back better than ever. That's a cunty villain.
As always, go fucking write something <3
